For our family, farming was just a casual thought as we all had other jobs for financial support. On our 10 acres of land we baled some hay, had a few chickens and sold eggs. We had a few other animals as well that were mainly pets.
In 2021 our family sat down and discussed the idea of starting Taylor Farms as a business and not just a a hobby. Looking out in the world it seems that there are less and less farmers so it is time that the younger generations step up the the challenge of producing our own food. And yes, it is a challenge.
It has been a slow start. Animals do die and it is hard for a starting business to sell their products without an audience/following. "People do not know us" this is where a lot of businesses fail because they do not stick to it until people find and get to know them. This is where the idea of creating and writing a blog came into play. If we can share our farm story and the things that we have learn with others maybe they(you) can also give advice and we can learn from each other. And honestly, blogs are great places to learn things. When we first got goats and had questions we relied on learning from other people's experiences through blogs, websites, and videos.
The first livestock animals brought for the farm were eight Boar/Spanish goats that were bred and in February 2021 we experienced our first kidding season. In July of 2021 we bought more goats; a Kiko buck and 11 Kiko does and our herd keeps expanding.
In February of 2022we got a buck and a doe New Zealand rabbit and started breeding and selling pet and meat rabbits.
We also acquired a tir-color Standard Rex doe that has added splashes of color to our kits.
We added cows to the mix in the summer of 2022 which calved expanding the herd. We also bought some more land and are excited to see what the future holds for Taylor Farms.
