Maybe you are just getting your goats and need to know what kind of medical supplies to have on hand or maybe you find yourself rushing to your local farm store every week to get something your goats need in an emergency. Here is a simple list of a few things you should always have on hand if you own goats. During kidding time, if you breed your goats, there are a few other things that would be good to have on hand but this list is just what you should have on hand all the time.
1. Penicillin or some type of antibiotic. If your goat gets an infection this is a good thing to start them on.
2. Vitamin B. This is a great boost for goats when they do not feel good. It does not make them better but it helps them for a little bit.
3. Needles and syringes. You will need these to give antibiotic and vitamin B and some dewormers.
4. Some type of dewormer. Try to keep both a white and a clear dewormer on hand all the time.
5. Some kind of antiseptic spray for cuts and scrapes. Goats will be goats and get hurt sometimes. We have had ear tags ripped out to random cuts and scrapes.
6. Baking soda and vegetable oil. Just incase they eat something bad and bloat.
The following are not as important but still nice to have on hand.
7. Nutri-Drench. If your goat is off feed this will give them some nutrition. There are also some homemade recipes online.
8. Electrolytes.
9. Red Cell.
Goats can be fun to have as pets or to raise for milk or meat but you have to take care of them. Keeping these things on hand will ensure that you have something available to help your goats if they have problems. Vets are expensive and if you can do something for your goats without a vet it will save you some money. Also, vets are busy and will not always be able to get there on time to save your goat. Learning how you can help your goat when they have problems is one of the best things you can do if you raise goats.
